How to submit a paper

Mission Statement


To encourage in-depth reflection and debate on issues of concern to both academics and practitioners interested in arbitration and mediation in Canada and around the world.

Editorial Policy

The Journal of Arbitration and Mediation (the Journal) was started in 2010 with the goal of fostering a rigorous analysis and understanding of mediation and arbitration law. It will provide a much needed Canadian forum for scholars and practitioners to address issues of mutual interest and importance. Articles that deal with or that focus on other forms of dispute resolution will also be considered for publication.

The Journal recognizes the importance and the need to promote the evolution of the multidisciplinary field that encompasses mediation and other extra-judicial modes of dispute resolution. The Journal hopes to meet this objective through the publication of texts that encourage the exchange of novel ideas or that outline the emerging contributions of empirical date or reflexive practice.

The Journal publishes both practical and scholarly writing. It welcomes articles, case comments and book reviews by scholars, practitioners and students from all jurisdictions and legal traditions around the world. Submissions may have a domestic or international focus, and may involve non-legal perspectives. The Journal is published twice a year, commonly in the spring and fall.

Guidelines for Contributors


The cover page should include the author’s name, affiliation, title, contact information (telephone number and email address) and date of submission.


Submissions should be double-spaced, using 12-point, Times New Roman font, with margins to facilitate the peer review process. Arabic numeral page numbers on bottom right corners. A table of contents shall immediately precede the work.

All citations must conform to the McGill Guide (Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 6th Edition, Toronto: Carswell). Manuscripts must be submitted in electronic form in a doc. or .txt format (i.e. not PDF, .docx, etc.). Please submit via email to:


Submissions should not be under 5000 words, but should not exceed 20,000 words, including footnotes.


All submissions must include an abstract, the length of which must not exceed 5% of the world count of the body of the article.

Submission Exclusivity

The Journal does not accept submissions that are currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.


Copyright in any material submitted to the Journal shall be assigned to the Journal and the Journal will have the exclusive right to first publication. Following first publication, such publishing rights shall be non-exclusive, except that publication in another Journal or any other media will require written permission from the Journal.


The Journal will consider submissions at all times for future publication. Please forward your papers to: no later than October 1st for the Autumn edition of the current year, or 1st April for the Spring edition.

Review Proces

The Journal  considers all manuscripts it receives without regard to the author’s name, affiliation or prior publications. Once a publication is received, an acknowledgement of receipt is forwarded by email to the author. Only papers that pass an internal evaluation will proceed to an external, anonymous peer review.

The Journal reserves the right to make editorial changes to all contributions as necessary before publication to ensure correctness of spelling, grammar, and conformity to style. Editorial decisions may be based on comments of internal or external reviewers. For English articles, editing decisions are based on the most current editions of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary and the Chicago Manual of Style. French articles are edited in accordance with Le Robert and the Dictionnaire terminologique de l’Office de la langue française.

Authors will be informed of the Journal’s decision by letter from the editors. Before the production editing process begins, authors will be given an opportunity to make a final set of changes if they so wish. Authors should consider this submission to be the final version of the paper.

The Journal reserves the right to refuse or withdraw acceptance from or delay publication of any manuscript.

Requirements upon Acceptance

Once a submission has been accepted for publication, authors will be asked to provide any acknowledgements that they wish to make (maximum 50 words), as well as their credentials, including any institutional affiliation.
